Why Is Information Protection So Important for Passenger Safety?
Passenger safety extends beyond the journey itself. It also includes the protection of information provided at every stage of using railway services. Michał Młotek, Deputy Director of the Office for the Protection of Classified Information and Defence Affairs at Polish State Railways (PKP), explains why safeguarding personal data is such an important aspect of modern railway operations.
The expert points out that passengers begin sharing their personal information as early as the ticket purchase process. Details such as a passenger’s name, travel route and eligibility for discounted fares are necessary to provide the service, but they also require appropriate protection. If obtained unlawfully, such information could be used to profile passengers or exploited for commercial purposes.
“At that point, we are no longer dealing with a customer, but with a person,” emphasises Michał Młotek, highlighting that the protection of personal data should be viewed primarily as the protection of passengers’ privacy and rights, rather than merely as a regulatory obligation.
Michał Młotek also stresses that effective information protection is one of the foundations of safety in today’s railway sector. Responsible management of personal data helps build passenger trust and reduces the risk of unauthorised access to or misuse of sensitive information.
